Daily sketch challenge, intro and #1-5

As the about page states, one of my main reasons for starting this blog is to simply sketch more. And what better way to achieve this than by attempting to make a sketch a day? (Suggestions are welcome, of course!) So as perhaps my only realistic resolution for 2014, I’ve decided to do just that: one sketch a day for the new year! This will obviously increase my output, but more than anything, I hope to simply improve my linework. Get a looser hand, more interesting lineweights and simply allow my sketching to get more natural.

I think one of the reasons I sketch less than I’d like is a slight perfectionist streak: my sketches don’t match up to what I picture in my mind, which can be disappointing, or it simply takes too much time to get there, which can turn a hobby into a chore. Enough of that: with this challenge I intend to have fun. No pressure, no big expectations up front, just a series of quick sketches.

Since my interest leads me towards architectural work, that’ll be the (main) focus of my sketches. Architecture, maybe some details, maybe some landscapes, and who knows what else I’ll come up with. I’ll try to write a short description with each sketch, with information about the project, the architect, its location etc. I’ll start with architecture in Brazil, as it seems a good opportunity to look closer into the architecture of the country I’ll be living in for the next few years. Finally, I intend to experiment with different pens and styles throughout the year. All in all, I’m pretty excited about this!

So here goes, the first series of daily sketches of the year. These focus on some projects in Rio de Janeiro, to complement my start of the year there.

Of course, as you can tell since it’s the 9th of January, I’m already behind. But I’m still feeling up to the challenge, and I intend to catch up! Not all at once–since pressuring myself to never fall behind ever isn’t exactly my idea of a fun challenge–but an extra sketch here and there will do the trick.

Hopefully, this’ll be an interesting journey for me, and for you readers as well. I’d be happy to hear any opinions and suggestions by the way, so leave me a comment if you have any!

First lines

While this blog is still heavily under construction, it wouldn’t hurt to put some content up, so here goes:

Every blog needs a first post, and I figured I might as well start with some older sketches. A small collection of sketches done in São Paulo (and one after leaving São Paulo), also found on my Instagram account.
